Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

WHAT IS DVT?

DVT is an acronym for Deep Venous Thrombosis. It is a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs. Dr Ling will manage this condition by first performing a thorough history and examination to determine the cause of the DVT. Dr Ling is an experienced Vascular Surgeon based in Melbourne who works closely with physicians specialising in blood clotting disorders (haematologists) to ensure you receive comprehensive treatment.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS OF A DVT?

A DVT can dislodge and travel to the lung (pulmonary embolus or PE). This can be life-threatening.

The clot (thrombus) also destroys the valves in the veins. This can lead to ‘post-thrombotic syndrome’ in about 50% of patients who have a large vein DVT.

Can anything be done to remove the clot?

A DVT can be treated with medications that thin the blood but do not dissolve the clot. Alternatively, for deep vein thrombosis treatment, a ‘clot-busting’ medication can be sprayed into the vein, and then the clot suctioned out with a special catheter. This is done using minimally invasive techniques. Dr Ling will discuss which DVT treatment option is best suited for your particular circumstance.
